The UK government’s travel corridor list continues to change as Covid rates creep up, with many popular European holiday destinations removed in the last few weeks. Holidaymakers face a 14-day quarantine when travelling back from Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria and Croatia, among other countries. The Foreign Office (FCO) also advises against travelling to these countries, invalidating the majority of insurance policies.
Although the travel corridor list currently includes 69 countries and territories, Britons are only able to travel to 18 of these without facing restrictions on arrival – and that number continues to change. In some cases, countries have an outright ban on tourists entering, such as Australia and New Zealand; and there are other instances where travellers face testing or quarantine on arrival, such as Iceland and Ireland. As countries are removed from the UK’s safe list, reciprocal quarantine measures are being imposed in some cases, including for arrivals in France.
The FCO’s advice on non-essential travel is also continually changing – this is based on per capita case numbers, with countries above 20 per 100,000 for seven days likely to be removed. On 20 August, transport secretary Grant Shapps announced that a range of other factors are taken into account, alongside the level and rate of confirmed cases, which includes the extent of testing in a country, whether cases were from a contained outbreak or general transmission, other government actions and more.
It is worth noting that previous trips may affect your next one. Some countries, such as Switzerland and Italy, have a ban anyone who has been in a high-risk country in the previous 14 days, and both are periodically updating their lists. Security measures could be in place at borders to prevent potential loopholes for passengers attempting to transit through other “safe” countries in order to dodge travel bans.
Although there are now many destinations open to UK tourists without restrictions, some may still have health screening on arrival or an entry form to complete in advance, such as Croatia and Greece. Countries not listed below may require testing on arrival, mandatory quarantine or have a ban on arrivals from the UK. The situation is constantly changing and restrictions could be subject to re-enforcement without notice.
